ImageThe Mozilla Corporation has released an advance testing version of its popular Firefox Web browser, just days after Google revealed its competing Chrome software.

The second alpha of Firefox 3.1 was made available overnight. The software, code-named Shiretoko, is at this stage intended for software developers and testers only, with the stable and recommended version of Firefox being 3.0.1.

In a statement, Mozilla said the testing version of Firefox introduced several new features, including the browser's highly anticipated support for a new video tag element introduced with the HTML 5 standard to provide more functionality around the amount of video that is increasingly being delivered through Web browsers.

ImageMicrosoft Corp. moved a step closer to releasing an update of its Internet Explorer Web browser with the introduction Wednesday of its preliminary IE8 Beta 2 version .

Depending on the success of the beta version, Explorer 8 could be finished by the end of the year, although a firm release date has not been announced.

Privacy and security enhancements are key elements of Explorer 8. The latest version incorporates a number of new tools, including one that some have dubbed "porn mode." Using InPrivate Browsing, Web surfers can begin a private browsing session from a new tab button. In this mode, evidence of any visited Web sites, browsing history and Web "cookies" disappear when the user closes the tab.

TraceMonkey, the JavaScript accelerator for Firefox 3.1
Shaon Shaon published 26 Aug 2008, 14:09 - 0 comments & 1 favs

ImageMozilla is accelerating JavaScript functions in pre-release versions of Firefox 3.1. Using the TraceMonkey just-in-time compiler the execution time for some functions is reduced to as little as five percent of previous version's execution time – the developers give some examples in the JavaScript Roadmap Blog.

In their blog, developers Andreas Gal and Michael Franz explain how the tracing mechanism in TraceMonkey works. One of the main tricks performed by Tracemonkey is that, where branching occurs, it generates not only the required code, but also considers and compiles the other branches and saves the code for subsequent use. The just-in-time compiler can generate code for x86 and ARM systems, which should also be a boost for the in-development Mobile Firefox.

ImageThis section describes the most user-visible new or changed features in FreeBSD since 6.0-RELEASE. In general, changes described here are unique to the 7-STABLE branch unless specifically marked as [MERGED] features.

Typical release note items document recent security advisories issued after 6.0-RELEASE, new drivers or hardware support, new commands or options, major bug fixes, or contributed software upgrades. They may also list changes to major ports/packages or release engineering practices. Clearly the release notes cannot list every single change made to FreeBSD between releases; this document focuses primarily on security advisories, user-visible changes, and major architectural improvements.
