ImageSLOWLY but surely, the idea of web-based software, often free, is catching on pretty well everywhere but Microsoft.

The latest convert, and a somewhat surprising one, is Adobe Systems, which is more usually known for its heftily priced graphics and publishing software. Adobe boss Bruce Chizen has confirmed that the company plans to offer a free web-based version of its Photoshop image editor within six months. Users will pay zilch to use the software to touch up their photos. Adobe will score from accompanying online ads.

This is just the start, it seems. Adobe plans to introduce many more online services and web-hosted applications to complement its traditional packaged products, Chizen says. There will also be "hybrid apps" in which Adobe uses the web to introduce extra features to its desktop products, such as Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.
