If the noisy crowd of "Web 2.0" startups and applications has made one point in 2006, it's that Web browsers can handle many of the tasks that used to be the domain of the desktop, such as e-mail, calendaring and writing documents.

"There's a vast array of people who don't need the huge feature set of Microsoft's Office, like pivot tables in Excel," says Scott Dietzen, CEO of Web-based software company Zimbra. "The market opportunity for these 'Office 2.0' tools is even bigger than 'Office 1.0.' "

These products won't put Microsoft's desktop-based Office Suite unit out of business anytime soon, but there are no such assurances that these companies won't put each other under as they scramble for a foothold among early adopters.
