MySpace is under the scanner once again, with more than a million of
its users believed to have fallen prey to malicious software that
installs spyware via a Windows bug.
Reportedly, the spyware spreads through a pop-up banner advertisement when browsing the MySpace Web site. Versions that have not been patched against the Windows MetaFile (WMF) are affected. However, users who had downloaded the patches released by Microsoft in January are safe from the attack. As per reports, the malicious advertisements have been running on MySpace since last week. iDefense, a US-based computer security firm, who first discovered the ad, said that the code hidden in the advert exploits the WMF bug, which installs adware. The ad has apparently managed to download adware on at least 1.07 million computers. When the user clicks on the ad, it directs him/her to a Russian Web site based out of Turkey. The internet usage of the user is then monitored by the Trojan, and the computer is flooded with pop-ups.  News source: Techtree
