Microsoft wins round 2 of its patent fight against Alcatel-Lucent

Microsoft is breathing a little easier today after winning round 2 of its patent battle against Alcatel-Lucent. U.S. District Court judge Rudi M. Brewster summarily ruled that Microsoft Media Player and Messenger programs did not infringe on Alcatel's speech pattern patents.

This win comes on the heels of last week's huge loss in the same courtroom. A jury ruled that Microsoft infringed on Alcatel-Lucent's MP3 patents and ordered the company to pay $1.5 billion Dollars which would make it the largest patent win in history.

There are four patent trials between Alcatel-Lucent and Microsoft. Judge Brewster divided the original claims into six separate cases.
