Linux fan sites are agog as Kerala wants to boot in with the open
source operating system for computers. Logged out in the process is
Microsoft. By 2008, more than 2,650 high schools will be clicking on to
a Linux operating system.
The move comes nearly three weeks after the VS Achuthanandan-led
Left Democratic Front government banned the manufacture and sale of
Coca-Cola and PepsiCo products in the state.
Kerala’s decision to bring Linux to 1.5 million students was
firmed up after free software guru Richard Stallman, an information
technology adviser to the state, met the chief minister last week.
“It is our stated policy that only free software should be used
for IT education in Kerala’s schools,” Education Minister MA Baby told
DNA. “The government is introducing Linux-based software as tools to
teach various subjects.”
