Microsoft released the Release Candidate 1 (RC1) milestone of Internet
Explorer (IE) 7 for Windows XP, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition,
and Windows Server 2003. This release follows the Beta 3 milestone by
almost exactly two months. With each subsequent IE 7 pre-release milestone, there's less and less to talk about. That's a good thing, actually: IE 7 is turning into a stable, reliable and even desirable Web browser, one that millions of people from around the world will quickly adopt when its released in Q4 2006 (late October or early November is my guess). With RC1, there's precious little going on: This release is all about minor fit and finish improvements (toolbar unlocking actually works now, for example), bug fixing, and performance improvements. Microsoft says there are no major new features in this version, but there is one feature that should cause users to cheer: It no longer requires you to manually uninstall any previous IE 7 beta versions you might have installed. Instead, the IE 7 RC1 installer will uninstall previous IE 7 versions for you, after a reboot, and then proceed with installing RC1, after a second reboot. Bravo. |
