IE8: What Do You Want To See?

ImageA survey went our recently asking beta testers for some feedback on Internet Explorer 7 and exploring what would be interesting to see in Internet Explorer 8. There were quite a few questions around RSS feeds which certainly looks like an area of significant interest for the team. The survey also hinted at usability improvements around navigation and favorites as well as other things.

Then it gives you the ability to fill in a free form response of what you want to see in Internet Explorer 8. Here are a few of the things that I would like to see in Internet Explorer 8.
  • Ad Blocking - The ability to quickly and easily block ads with the ability to block based on the domain the ads are severed from and the ability to use a blacklist service that the community could maintain. This would have to be off by default I am sure for legal reasons. It could hurt the profitability of many web sites and ad providers, like say GOOGLE. Hey, maybe they will do it just for that. I am sure content providers will find other ways to annoy us, but its a start.
  • Web Standards - Internet Explorer 7 made some significant headway for Microsoft in this regard, but I want to see them continue to push to adopt web standards where standards aren't fundamentally flawed. If they are broken then I want to see Microsoft work with that community to fix the standard. I don't want not make changes to them and implement them that way.
  • Podcast Support - The ability to consume rss feeds and the common repository is nice, the usability isn't the best from with-in the browser, but they seem to be working on that. Adding additional media type to the support would be the next logical step in RSS support. I find that iTunes selection of Podcast is limited and adding ones that they don't "feature" is hard to find. Most people probably don't even know about Podcast like these Technet ones because they aren't in iTunes.
  • Inline Search - Finding something on a page is a pain. I want to see quick access to an inline search exposed via the status bar.
  • Download Manager - A built in file download manager with bit level restart functionality. It is very frustrating to get most of the way through a large download and have that download time out on you. This feature would save me no end of headaches at home on wireless that always seem to flake out on a large download.
  • Windows Presentation Foundation UI - In my would never happen with this release, but I would love to see it category is redo the Internet Explorer UI in Windows Presentation Foundation for the best possible Windows Vista experience. If you have seen the new Yahoo Messenger then you will know what I am talking about. If not check out this video.
So, what would you like to see delivered as part of Internet Explorer 8?
