IBM's Diligent Dedupe Buy

IBM is in the midst of an enterprise storage buying binge.

Fresh off of its acquisition of FilesX, which specializes in continuous data protection, the enterprise computing giant today announced that it has also acquired Diligent Technologies for an undisclosed sum.

Framingham, MA-based Diligent offers inline deduplication for mid- to large-sized organizations with storage pools to match. Although three product lines compose the firm's portfolio, IBM attention is primarily fixed on deduplication, a technology that cuts down on redundant data to help businesses optimize their storage resources, particularly backup stores.

Diligent's ProtecTIER Data Protection Platform provides disk-based, deduplicated backup that scales up to 1 petabyte. At its core is the Diligent's inline or "realtime" HyperFactor technology that can help achieve backup speeds of up to 450 MBps thanks to a RAM-resident index that performs dedupe on the fly.

Diligent also dabbles in virtual tape with VTF Open and VTF Mainframe.

Soon to be folded into IBM System Storage, Diligent's technology will be made available as a dedupe complement to Tivoli Storage Manager and other backup suites, according to IBM. Other plans include targeting disaster recovery and green storage with the newly bought technology.

In addition to Diligent and FilesX, IBM's other recent storage acquisition involved XIV, a firm based in Israel that tackles the storage demands of Web 2.0 apps and digital media. That deal reportedly fetched approximately $300 - 350 million.
