One of the most useful changes to mobile search includes result filtering. Previously, I would perform a search-say, for a restaurant-and then have to sift through normal web results for that query, which could consist of the restaurant's web page, blog posts mentioning the restaurant, and a smattering of restaurant review sites. The Google team is aware that mobile users are usually looking for a restaurant because they want to know specific information right away and on one page-such as the address and phone number-not so that we can browse for hours on the topic like we might on a computer. "So if you search for [bbc] on your device, you'll get a link to the mobile-friendly BBC website. Search for [us post office], and you'll get listings for the branches that are closest to your set location, and so on. No extra stuff that gets between you and the information you need," writes Google Mobile Team product manager Yael Shacham. |
