ImageAnother security vulnerability in Google's new Chrome browser has been identified.

Vietnamese security company Bach Khoa Internet Security (BKIS) has found a flaw in Google Chrome 0.2.149.27 and posted details on its Web site. The company says the problem is a critical buffer-overflow vulnerability that could allow a hacker to perform a remote attack and take complete control of the affected system.

ImageMozilla Corp. answered claims that Google Inc.'s Chrome browser outperforms Firefox with benchmark results of its own that showed the upcoming Firefox 3.1 is faster at executing JavaScript.

According to tests run by Brendan Eich, Mozilla's chief technology officer and the creator of JavaScript, Firefox's new TraceMonkey interpreter is up to 28% faster than V8, the name Google gave to the interpreter used by Chrome.

Google's Chrome browser gets strong welcome: CEO

ImageCERNOBBIO, Italy - Google Inc's Web browser Chrome has had a "very strong" reception since its launch this week, with several million downloads, Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt told Reuters on Friday.

Chrome is the U.S. Internet search engine's head-on challenge to market leader Microsoft Corp's Internet Explorer. Google says Chrome lets users run many applications that once worked only when installed on a local personal computer.

"The initial reaction has been very strong (with) many, many millions of downloads, (a) very favorable response so far," Schmidt said on the sidelines of an economic conference at Lake Como in northern Italy.

How will Google Chrome change the user experience on the web?

ImageGoogle Chrome was born explicitly as a platform for web applications. From the first bits I saw I can say that Google's new creation delivers most of the promises and brings new interesting innovations in the user experience realm. Competitors will find them hard to ignore, especially when you look at the tab concept improvements. For a good review of these points, you can refer to this post on Ars Technica.

Many hailed Google's move as a revolutionary step. And indeed, with Google Chrome, the web application era is getting real. Let's look beyond the technology and outline some possible models and consequences Chrome might have for the field of user experience:

Firefox's Aurora Concept, where the web browser remains the key tool and the main interface for using a web application, is a service that is completely online. In this case, the user experience is chiefly based on typical web technologies, that is, the magic triad XHTML, CSS, and Javascript. Standard web browsing is blended in with web application interaction. The user jumps between tabs within the same context and tool.

Dell launches low-cost ‘netbook’ laptop

ImageDell on Thursday became the latest company to enter the “netbook” market with the launch of a small, stripped-down laptop designed to appeal to customers looking for a low-cost, Internet-ready computer.

The world’s second-biggest personal computer maker said its new Inspiron Mini 9 was geared towards mobile consumers and first-time PC buyers looking for a highly portable machine capable of performing tasks like internet surfing, shopping, and online chat.

The launch comes a few months after Hewlett-Packard, Dell’s biggest rival, entered the market with its own mini-laptop. Asustek Computer, a Taiwanese PC maker, kicked off the market last year with its mini-laptop, the Eee PC.

The move towards smaller, stripped down laptops presents a conundrum for computer makers that have already been struggling with a shift in customer preferences towards lower-cost PCs.

A Sony Blu-ray Player Under Every Tree This Christmas? Not At $400

ImageNow that the format war with HD-DVD is over, the biggest hurdle getting people to buy Blu-ray players is that they're too expensive. And it looks like that problem won't go away this holiday season: Sony's (SNE) two U.S. Blu-ray players will be priced at $400 and $2,000.

So while wealthy movie addicts might pick up a player this year, don't expect big, mainstream sales until Blu-ray players dip below $200. It's still possible that some gadget maker and/or retailer could price a device at $200 this year -- but it won't be Sony.

Sanyo on Wednesday introduced its Xacti E2 digital camcorder. The camcorder records video onto a flash media card and can work underwater, as well. It costs $399.99.

Xacti E2 The Xacti E2 features a “pistol grip” style design and records video in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format at 640 x 480 pixels. It can also take 8-megapixel still images. The device is waterproof and can operate underwater to a depth of five feet, according to Sanyo, for up to one hour at a time.

Video and still images are recorded to SD or SDHC flash media cards — a single 8GB SDHC card can store up to eight hours of full motion video or about 2000 images, according to the company. Video and still images can be uploaded and viewed on a Mac or PC using an included cable.

The Xacti E2 can record video for up to an hour, in five feet of water.

Mozilla vs. Google

The dust hasn’t even settled on Chrome’s release and already Mozilla is feeling the pressure. The company today released a series of benchmarks showing Firefox 3.1 will be faster than anything Google can muster with Chrome.

Chrome is running V8, an open source Javascript engine, which Google claims, is faster than anything currently offered on the Web. And based on our tests of Chrome, we tend to agree.

ImageForget the Detroit Auto Show. There are plenty of Chrome watchers in Mountain View, Calif.

With Google's debut of its open-source browser on Tuesday, an onslaught of reviews followed. And the results largely point to a speedy machine, but one not without its flaws.

Don Reisinger's blog on TechCrunch not only applauds the speed of the browser, but also its simplicity:
