In-Game XMB And Trophies Confirmed For PS3 Update 2.40

ImageNo matter how many "inside sources" there are, rumors are always just rumors until we hear an official word from the only source that matters. Hence, you'll all be very happy to know that two long-awaited and much-discussed features are headed our way with firmware update 2.40 for the PlayStation 3: the in-game XMB and trophies.

We already have a new firmware update (v2.36), but this is just another one to improve system stability "when playing select PlayStation format titles." Over the past month or so, we've been hearing all sorts of rumors saying that v2.40 was the big one, and today, those rumors were proven correct. Director of PlayStation Network Operations Eric Lempel made the following post over at the official PlayStation blog to confirm our hopes:

"Were also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include XMB access in-game. The update will also include trophies, an exciting new feature that well be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements. Weve talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you cant wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly."

Yay! For the most part, firmware updates were a common thing in the early days of the PS3, but none of them could be considered quite as significant as this one. It's a big step towards ramping up the overall appeal of the system, and gamers have been clamoring for both options ever since the console's launch. So there you have it: firmware update 2.40 brings the in-game XMB and trophies; no doubt about it.
