I’m not particularly a part of the consolidated Google empire.
I’ve got a Gmail account, but it’s relegated mainly to collecting spam,
or messages from people who can’t remember my actual email address. But
I know plenty of people who swear by Google's web-based email and its
attendant calendar and chat programs.
And given that Google’s been making a habit of tuning its websites to be more iPhone friendly, it’s little surprise that they’ve created a new version of Google Talk, their instant messaging application, that’s specifically designed for the iPhone.
To access the new version, just surf to http://www.google.com/talk,
and you’ll be launched into the stripped down interface. From there,
you can view your contacts, send instant messages, and even set your
status.

Google has been ordered to surrender the data of users that watch
YouTube videos, including videos streamed on other websites, to Viacom.
The ruling (pdf) was made by Judge Stanton of the federal court for the Southern District of New York.
YouTube user data now available to Viacom includes usernames, videos
viewed and IP addresses, which Viacom can use to identify some
individuals through ISPs — making users potentially liable for
copyrighted material they consumed, the same way the RIAA pursued peer-to-peer file sharers.

Intel’s 40th anniversary is July 18 and the world’s largest chipmaker is making a big bet on the past.
The Santa Clara, Calif., semiconductor maker would undoubtedly
quibble with this characterization of its strategy for the next four
decades. However, Patrick P. Gelsinger, an Intel senior vice president
and one of the company’s leading technologists, stressed the crucial
importance of the backward compatibility of the company’s future
microprocessor chips during an informal press briefing he gave Monday
to commemorate the company’s upcoming celebration.
The idea, according to Mr. Gelsinger, is that one of Intel’s chief
advantages is that Microsoft’s MS-DOS operating system will be booting
on the teraflop Intel microprocessor in the personal computer of the
future.

RealNetworks opens its DRM-free music store with a bang
Heads up to all the music lovers out there: RealNetworks’
Rhapsody online music service opened up a new, DRM-free MP3 store, and it's giving away a free
download of any $10 album to the first 100,000 people that sign up.
It’s important to note that at the time of this writing, it appears that the
site is buckling under what I would hope to be a surge in traffic – most of my
activities on the site generally result in a lengthy timeout followed by
a black-text-on-white-background “Proxy Error”.

Adobe Systems is working with Google and Yahoo! to improve the
accuracy of searches for Flash ads and media by delivering an optimized
version of its ubiquitous player.
Google is today expected to start offering searches of media content
using a version of the player that'll help search engines index content
using Adobe's Flash file format (SWF). Improved search from Yahoo! has
been promised, although, as yet, there is no shipment date.
Adobe told The Register it's talked to different groups
inside Microsoft to use the version of Flash Player with that company's
struggling Live Search service. No agreement has been reached, and
negotiations are no longer active, Adobe said.

A new gadget for Google Desktop called Google Media Server
allows you to take content found on your computer or online Google
services like YouTube and Picasa Web Albums, and shares it with UPnP
compatible devices like the PS3. Unfortunately, as explained in the
discussion group, Google Media Server does not work with Xbox — they
integrating is technically possible, but their legal department won’t let them do it.
Initial reviews aren’t spectacular, but the software is beta, and I think it’s a good start.

As Yahoo’s shares head for their lowest close
since Microsoft made public its takeover offer on February 1, it isn’t
hard to find Yahoo critics both inside and outside the company.
We have heard from a number of employees and executives, not to
mention shareholders, who have grown increasingly frustrated about the slow pace of change and the endless rounds of reorganizations, the latest of which was announced Thursday. (Of course, we also hear from people inside Yahoo who still back the current management and corporate strategy.)
Yahoo stock price over a six-month time frame.

NEW YORK - Microsoft's Bill Gates told journalist Tom
Brokaw he does not think a deal with Yahoo Inc was likely, CNBC
reported on Friday.
Microsoft had sought a tie-up with Yahoo for more than a year and by
early May had offered up to $47.5 billion, or $33 per share, to buy the
Internet company.
The software giant had hoped a Yahoo deal would accelerate its
ability to capitalize on Web advertising growth and compete with Google
Inc, which is increasingly fighting for the same Internet audience.
